First I would like to say what a great receiver this is in my theater. Wow. I was looking for a quick fix before I bought a THX Certified Receiver. Boy, am I impressed. I am very tech savvy with these items and I gave this 4 stars in the “Ease of Use” category because the surround settings were “usable” right out of the box! It also has an auto setup (cord included) that allows you just to push buttons. Take note this will require your patience and attention. This may take up to 3 hours, but the aftermath is a fine tuned surround to die for. I can’t wait to get a 3-d TV.

It has HDMI A/V pass-through along with all speaker posts. Love this receiver.

    Sound…………9.5 (No THX)
    Quality………..9
    Appearance…8
Price…………..10 (Others with the same options are an easy 450)
    Overall use…..9
Overall……….9.1 (Great receiver for the options)

Sony STR-DH 800 Audio Video Receiver Review, March 1, 2010

Purchase of this unit necessitated by Sony Wega being worn out after 10 years of service. We upgraded to an LCD Sony Bravia Z 5100 series TV with 240 hz motion flow technology which as with most TV’s on market today offer use of HDMI cable connections. After reading reviews I was pleased to learn that the HDMI cables provide both audio and video through same connection thus reducing the need to purchase additional cable connections.

Our current set up has Directv satellite (NFL Sunday Ticket fan) with the Bravia Z TV, the new 7.1 A/V unit along with an upgrade to Sony Blue Ray N460 model and we are continuing to use five speaker system from previous Sony home theater.

Although currently not utilizing HD input, decided to take leap and experience latest technology where many praised the sound and picture quality, thus requiring purchase and upgrade of audio receiver to take advantage of HDMI performance and also the Bravia Sync technology which allows for easy set up.

With the exception of spending a weekend figuring out by process of elimination problem with a faulty Insignia brand HDMI cable hookup for Blue Ray player to function, the rest of the set up was performed rather effortlessly.

This Sony AV Receiver has a higher sound output that we noticed right away. Really easy and convenient feature is utilizing the auto calibration for your home theater system sound by connecting supplied microphone to the AV and performing installation steps noted. Looks like we will also make the switch to downloading movies from service providers since both this Bravia Z-series TV and AV system offer built-in capability. Additionally the AV receiver offers built-in satellite radio service capability…nice and convenient features for sure !!!

The key for any home theater system is following the size recommendations for sizing up your TV for optimum viewing per specifications listed on most product data sheets and matching AV capability based on the size of your room where you will listen.

Very solid performer but not super easy to setup, February 27, 2010

This is a very nice little receiver. Good feature set and great sound. There are 2 comments I’d like to make.

    1. If you read the other reviews on this many people complain about how hard it is to hook up the speakers due to tight spacing of the posts. This receiver is NOT setup for bare wire speaker connections. Get yourself some nice banana plugs (I got the GLS Audio 10-pack: http://www.amazon.com/GLS-Audio-Chrome-Connector-Banana/dp/B000QIZXHG/ref=pd_ys_iyr1) and you’ll have no problems.

    2. I’d like to echo the complaints about the poor manual and the lack of on-screen menus. This is a receiver designed to be hooked up to a HD TV, the very least Sony could have done was taken advantage of the nice big screen they would have access to. The lousy manual just adds a bit to the setup frustration.

Once you have it setup, however, this is a very nice receiver that offers a lot of bang for the buck.
