Great Solution for Streaming movies and Blu-ray!, December 18, 2009
    By andorukuraku “andorukuraku” (savannah, ga)

I have had the BDP-N460 for about 3 weeks now. So far, we have watched 3 Netflix Movies, used it for YouTube, watched an Amazon On Demand movie and also watched Blu-ray discs. The performance of Netflix movies has been great. Out of the box, I had to do an update, but the system did it automatically the first time I tried to access Netflix. I was very pleased with the picture quality, which I would describe as near-DVD. The Amazon on Demand worked flawlessly and links to your existing Amazon.com account if you have one. I purchased the Linksys Wireless Bridge with my unit and am connecting via a Wireless G Network. I was worried I would have to upgrade to N to get good performance but that hasn’t been an issue. I also have a 16 gig. flash drive installed on my unit which is supposed to help with the buffering of streaming content.

Having looked at all options including the Roku, Apple TV, etc., I think this is a great solution. The only feature I dislike is that in Netflix you can only see movies that you have put in your Netflix queue. You cannot browse available titles as you can in Amazon on demand.

I highly recommend this unit. As a bonus, it works very well with our existing Sony TV.

BDP-N460 Works Great With My System, November 23, 2009

I’d been putting off getting a blu-ray player because of all the bad things I’d been hearing about them. Well, I’m very happy with this player. It’s works great and I’m having lots of fun with it.

No unacceptable slowness. NO HDMI connection problems with my 4 year old Sony KD-34XBR960 TV.

I’m using the coax digital audio to connect to my receiver. The manual states that, the PCM signals, output from the DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL/COAXIAL) jack, will be output as 48 kHz/16 bit instead of 96 kHz/24 bit if, the source is copyprotected. An HDMI receiver would insure the best sound quality. However, I’ve been experiencing really excellent sound. I have a huge sound system and really notice the improvement in blu-ray sound. I don’t feel a need to get an HDMI receiver.

The only problem I ran into so far was with some 4:3 aspect ratio DVD’s. To play these properly you need to set one of the player’s settings to “Fixed Aspect Ratio”. Although this worked on some DVD’s, it didn’t work on others. I found that if you just press stop and then play again, it would adjust to the correct aspect ratio. I don’t know if this is the player’s fault or the DVD. Maybe a firmware upgrade witll fix it. The work around is not that big of a deal anyway.

Blu-Ray picture quality is great, of course. But I was impressed that even DVD’s look better. I did not expect this since I already have a couple good DVD players (Oppo and Sony). My TV does a much better job of upscaling than my DVD players. This Sony Blu-Ray Player seems to upscale as good or better that my TV. Very smooth motion and all around picture quality.

It was time to upgrade so I ended up buying a blu ray player for my husband. It was recommended that I buy a Sony to go with out Sony Bravia television. After reading the reviews on another Sony model, I decided to go for this one. The two features I do not like about this model is the slow load/start up time and the device doesn’t have a clock on the front.
Setup was fairly easy and at the time of purchase, I didn’t have the HDMI cable so I ended up using a video cable. Now that we have the HDMI cable, the picture quality is amazing!!!!
The Netflix setup was a slight pain but fairly simple. I had to register the Sony device, then confirm that I was a Netflix subscriber, and then do a firmware update and after that, I was able to retrieve my netflix instant movie queue.
I would recommend this model to a friend.
