Integrated Amplifier With Built-In DAC and iPod Dock;

I’m a music lover and I purchased one of these for my office. So far, I’m really impressed with the features and performance of the iDecco.
First, understand that what these folks do is substantially different than what many lesser units do: they tap into the raw digital data stream from your iPod, converting it to analog using built-in high quality DAC components – not the relatively poor quality DAC in your iPod. Most other docks accept the analog signal from your iPod, which means you’re using the DAC inside the iPod to do the digital to analog conversion…the iDecco skips this in favor of its better quality DAC (an ESS 9006 Sabre, claimed to be good for up to 118db SNR).
There’s also a built-in tube amplifier, capable of about 30 Watts per channel (yes, the ad says 40 WPC, but that’s into a nonstandard 6 ohm load…8 ohm speakers see about 30 WPC). The tube amp is your typical tube sounding amplifier: warm, glowing sound without the harsh, edgy sense you often get from solid state.
In addition to the iPod dock, there’s a USB connection for audio input from a computer, plus an optical digital input and a standard 2-channel analog input. There are preamp outputs, should you want to use the DAC and preamp sections of your iDecco with a different amplifier. It also include a headphone output, letting you use the iDecco as a world-class headphone amplifier.
The device is well constructed and seems to be built for the long haul – it’s small, but over 20 pounds. Although tube based, it doesn’t seem to throw off a ton of heat, although you wouldn’t want to use it in an enclosed space.
Connected to a pair of quality speakers, and with good program source materials (that is, lossless audio – or at least nothing compressed too heavily), the sound quality is amazing. You’ll want efficient speakers, since 30 WPC isn’t exactly a huge output, but with the right speakers, they sound amazing. I’ve been using Peachtree Audio’s DS5.5 speakers with an older Sunfire subwoofer I happened to own, and the combination is wonderful.
