I purchased the Flip Ultra HD camcorder first, but I sent it back to Amazon a few weeks later. The main reason I’m glad I ended up going with the Vado 3G is because, unlike the Flip, it actually has OPTIONS!
The Flip Ultra HD does what it’s supposed to do. It has a sturdy body, good picture and sound quality, and it’s easy to use. Unfortunately, my computer couldn’t handle Flip’s large HD files until after they’d been converted to a more compressed HD format. While this may not be Flip’s fault, it quickly proved itself to be more trouble than the camera was worth.
So… I was initially going to go with Vado’s 1st generation model, but after watching a ton of Vado HD videos on YouTube, I couldn’t help but notice the generally terrible mono sound quality of the first two models. The volume level for the 3G could still be louder, but at least it’s equipped with stereo sound and an external mic input. The 3G’s picture quality is also an improvement over previous models.
The Flip Ultra HD only allows you to shoot in one mode. The Vado allows shooting in 3 different modes, and the lowest quality format -VGA mode- is still 30fps and comparable to the higher quality formats, which was a big selling point for me. Personally, I don’t mind the 640 x 480 resolution. Does everything need to go widescreen? When I get a faster computer, I’ll probably use the HD & HD+ modes more often, but again, at least now I have a pocket cam that gives me some choices.
Unlike the flip…
I can adjust the brightness of the picture a bit, I can snap photos, I can hook it up to a TV via HDMI *or* AV, and when I’m playing a video back through the camera I can actually *hear* the audio (what a concept!) or plug in headphones if I need to. And finally, unlike the flip, keeping the Vado’s battery properly charged doesn’t result in me getting a low battery message after an hour of use. In fact, I have yet to get a low battery message from this camera.
All in all, the Vado 3G is the best pocket camcorder fit for me.
Cons:
*Audio level could/should be louder
*Yes, the touch buttons are sensitive
*The 4GB capacity might be an issue for you (it’s not for me)

When I first opened the box I was pretty surprised just how slim and light this camcorder is….it was definitely more svelte than the Flip I had owned previously. I charged it up and started to record. At all levels of recording quality I think almost anyone would be satisfied. Images were crisp and clear and I felt the audio was fine for such a small camcorder. Once you record some video you just pop out the USB and plug it into your computer. No complicated software to install, the interface just pops up. While the software interface didn’t have any real advanced features it is more than adequate for what most people would be doing. You can even take a still image from your video. You can upload to YouTube or Facebook easy as can be.
I figured there would be many people who would be traveling with this as an emergency camcorder and so I gave it to my wife on her recent business trip from Ohio to Norway. I wish this had come with a case but I used an old Oakley soft pouch for sunglasses and it was fine in that. The Vado made the trip easily as it is so small my wife was able to throw it in her purse and not even realize it was there because it was so small and light. While in Norway she took two videos. One was outside in a windy environment and I was very impressed with the video quality and how well the audio picked up her talking about the surroundings. Very impressed.
A couple issues I have. For this price it should come with a case. Also, for this price it should either come with more memory or have an SD/Mini-SD slot so you can add memory to it. I think the sweet spot in it’s current package would be $149…just my opinion. Keep in mind that this little camcorder will NOT take the place of a full fledged HD camcorder and the software does not match the levels of stand along video editing software but for this price that is expected. But for kids or someone who travels and needs something small this is great. This is just as good as the Flip video’s if not a tiny bit better on the video quality. Overall recommended.
