I never write reviews. NEVER. But this is something that just has to be reviewed because everyone should have one of these. It’s a little long but I feel that this has to be said. If I can’t convince you, go to the store and mess around with one if you’d like. Better yet, read all the reviews. They all can’t be wrong.

I’ve been a windows user for all my life. The experience has been great all the way through XP. With all the negativity surrounding Vista, I decided not to persue it. I’ve had relatively little problems with windows honestly except dealing with all the problems I deal with on a daily basis (Help Desk Tech). If there’s anything that I feel like touching least when I come home, it was my XP machine.

Why did I go Mac? I’ve seen the hundreds of things that can go wrong with Windows. I’ve heard all the complaints about Vista. Haven’t played much with 7 but just messing around with it @ Best Buy I thought, “Yea maybe it’s better than Vista but it’s pretty much the SAME OLD WINDOWS when it comes down to it.” I’m deploying soon and I had a 17″ Dell Inspirion 1705 Windows XP machine (See how long that is? I am happy to say that when someone asks me what I’m rollin with, I reply, “13-inch MacBook Pro” A lot shorter but that’s besides the point). Anyways, the screen is HUGE and there was no way I’m taking that tank with me over there. WAY to heavy and WAY to bulky! So I was in the market for a Laptop that was at most 14″. When it comes to electronics, I research a ton.

What was the first thing I typed up when I was looking for a new PC?

“What is the best brand of laptops (Windows)?”

Yea that didn’t help any. I got “HP is the best!” Then I got “HP is the worse!” So it was a lot of mixed reviews for mostly all of them. So I thought that I’d venture into Mac since I’ve never owned one. Went to the site and it gave me 2 options: Macbook and Macbook Pro. I opted for the Macbook Pro because 1) I wanted 4GB of RAM (I read it just works better all around) and 2) I wanted an SD slot. There are other reasons why Macbook Pro is nicer but I’ll get into that later.

What was my only doubt before buying Mac? What if I need Office? Well there’s bootcamp. I’ll tell you what, so far I’ve had no use for Windows yet (waiting to see how Office for Mac 2011 is before I decide). So I did it and let me tell you, I’ve never had more fun messing with a computer than I’ve had with my Mac. Ok enough ranting, what do I like? What don’t I like?

Pros:
+Great design- A reason to get Macbook Pro over Macbook: the construction. All PCs=Plastic

+OS is so easy- Navigating through my files couldn’t be easier. No more “Well that file is in c:\windows\localprofile\temp\settings\…ETC” It’s all simple to find (It also helps using Spotlight)

+Dashboard and Expose- Widgets + Easy way to find what you have open = FUN

+iLife- Bottom like, iPhoto and iMovie BLOW AWAY windows standard photoviewer and windows movie maker (garbage, cheap)

+ The touchpad- It’s more than just being big, it’s amazing. The gestures make the experience so much easier and fun. Want to scroll down? Place to fingers on the pad and swipe down. There are others but hard to explain

+ It’s just flat out fun to use- Windows just started getting dull for me. Mac is fresh and exciting. When you buy a car do you want to get a transportation (PC) or do you want to get something that you enjoy driving (MAC)? I enjoy driving Mac everyday.

Cons:
- Adjusting: It’s difficult adjusting using windows all my life. But apple has set up many videos online to help you along. Thanks!

- The little things I was used to: again goes back to adjusting to a new OS. Alt+F4 is now Command+W. Gotta get used to it. No biggie.

Honestly, maybe I’m being biased (sue me) but I can’t find a lot of cons yet as I’m still very new to this.

Bottom Line: You want a mac. Start a new adventure in your life. It’s not too late. Mac will make your life easier in ways you couldn’t imagine.

And hey, you might just have a little fun while you’re at it

This is my first mac notebook. I bought a mac mini last year and just love it. I ended up hooking it to the television as a home theater PC and found myself in need of a computer at times when the mac mini was acting as TV. I was upgrading from a 2004 dell laptop to this and I’m just noticing some things that I’d like to point out if you have never had a mac laptop.
Built in webcam that acts as an ambient light sensor when it gets brighter/darker in the room.
Backlit keys.
Touchpad/trackpad gestures that can be real time savers compared to a full keyboard (& i am a keyboard fanatic)
I have not messed with it yet, but I think you can talk to a macbook too and it will launch applications or do things (my friends do that)
The magsafe power adapter is like a magnet connection so if you kick the cord you won’t break anything, it will just pop out.

Overall, I like it. It’s fairly light. I wanted something light with good battery life. I knew I was happy with the graphics card on the mini so I shouldn’t be let down here either since this is an improvement on that. I have to question whether I will use the cd drive very much, but I guess it’s cool if I need to rip a cd to iTunes. When I had this on today at work next to my dell and external monitor I could only notice how dingy/brown their screens look in comparison. The colors on this screen are really great. The keyboard has a nice tactile feel to it as well, I really never miss a beat with this thing. The firewire connection was useful to transfer my settings from the mac mini as well.

Ok so I didnt get a i5 because I felt the price was a little high and my desktop is maxed with the some great gear so figured i didnt need it. I also couldnt decide between this and a best buy vaio CW27 that had a i5 but the reviews werent great for the vaio thats around the same price. I have used Macs in the past but never owned one. I have to say this is probably my 6th laptop in about 8 years. And all I have to say to apple is WOW this thing is built like a tank. The one piece is awesome it feels so sturdy. Opened it up and right out the gate everything I threw at it, it just worked. The programs poped right up with no lag like windows.

Were my windows PC would stutter playing my Canon 7D’s 1080 videos the mac played right through them and I edited a little video in imovie just fine. So I am happy and really liking it so far. I will probably upgrade the 4gb memory in a few months when 8gb drops a little in price. Right now 8Gb memory is up there like $300 -$400.

I notice on sites people complaining that macbooks dont have Blu-ray and really why would apple put blu-ray into they’re laptops when they own the itunes store and sell movies to download. And most of the time with new blus you get a free digital copy so why would you want to bother caring around the extra discs. I’m gonna let my PS3 stick to playing Blus on my big screen.lol.

• First cutting edge laptop that I’ve owned, April 9, 2010

To set the context: I have a two year old Dell desktop, a 4 year old Dell Latitude D400 (12″ screen with INtel Pentium M), and a 1 year old Dell Mini 9″ (Intel Atom). Like many, I no longer use my desktop, and the D400 was getting a bit long in the tooth. The Mini I found useful for taking on travel but was agonizingly slow for daily use with a very cramped keyboard. Even the D400 choked on multiple websites on occasion and multitasking was a chore. Of course, neither laptop had discrete graphics.

This new laptop has changed everything. To be fair, I would probably be raving about the better experience on any current laptop compared to the older Latitude. However, I really do think the U30JC, even though it’s under $1000, is on the cutting edge. It sports Intel’s new Core i3, the successor to the Core 2 Duos (still around at good deals), and Nvidia discrete graphics. Critically, Nvidia’s Optimus allows for seamless switching to the integrated graphics when power saving is an issue.

I have not really taxed the computer yet and I will update the review down the road with thoughts on more heavy duty performance and battery life issues. But I imagine a number of folks are considering this model and would find initial thoughts helpful.

1) The build quality is very nice. The brushed metallic exterior and lack of plastic except on the screen bezel minimizes fingerprints. Very solid and looks great.

2) I prefer matte screens but the glossy screen in regular indoor conditions is great. I can see this be annoying in very bright light, however. Definition and video quality are leagues better than what I’m used to or have seen before in sub-$1000 laptops.

3) Performance is awesome on my limited trials. Hulu, youtube, multiple websites, quicken, windows media player. Everything pops up so quickly and the platform has no issue with lots and lots of multitasking. No stuttering, no lagging.

4) I really like the programmability and adjustability of everything. For example, maybe this is a Win 7 feature, but I really like the ability to assign “hibernate” to the power button.

5) This is definitely not a thin and light ultraportable. It’s a bit heavier than my D400 and bulkier because of the bigger screen. I am still going to travel on work with the Dell Mini. It would be OK for students but I think it’s too big (and performance overkill anyway) for most business travelers. I am viewing this as a desktop replacement and because I’m not going to be using this as my primary movie viewer or gaming platform, I really think 13″ is where I want to be at.

6) Battery life seems to be excellent. I have not put a video on endless loop to max out the battery (and you can read technical reviews that are now popping up). HOwever, just having the laptop idling and using it periodically throughout the day, it was lasting a looong time.

7) I am not a huge fan of the chiclet keyboard and prefer the regular keyboards with more travel and contours. However, I can see that this would be easier to clean and it’s not a bad typing experience. I don’t find the layout strange in any way.

I really hate touchpads (one reason why I stuck with Dell and its pointing stick). I found this touchpad hard to use and not uniformly sensitive, especially on the left side. This could be a slightly fiddly unit or could be my lack of experience. In any event, I am going to use a mouse. (Lack of integrated bluetooth on this laptop is a demerit).

9) very quiet, didn’t run very hot in my limited testing.

I found the whole Asus package to be stripped down and bare bones, which I actually liked. I didn’t think there was a ton of bloatware compared to other companies. The box was very small and spartan and there is no manual (it’s on the desktop). Some of the built-in Asus utilities are not fully explained. Most of the Intel/Nvidia and random stickers come off easily to provide a very clean, elegant look.

Overall, I believe now (and will update with additional thoughts) that this is a spectacular value. Yes, there are things that I would like changed, but I am very happy with the machine standing alone and then compared to the price point, it’s awesome.

• GOOD, BASIC LAPTOP – BUT NO MICROPHONE!, March 1, 2010

A little disappointed as I recently ordered and received from amazon this Acer AS5732Z-4867 and was satisfied that it was a good, basic laptop, at a budget price. However, I discovered today, that Acer was good enough to give me a nice, integrated webcam with this model, but NO microphone, only a microphone jack to connect an external mic. When shopping for laptops, I am in the habbit of searching the specs to see if one includes a webcam and not whether it comes with a built-in mic as well. A built-in mic would be on most laptops, I thought, especially if it comes with a webcam. Not so with this model. If you are going to use the webcam for Skype or Messenger or other communications, you will have to know sign language or the other party will have to lip read unless you are willing to buy the external mic to plug into the microphone jack.
UPDATE: Purchased this mic Olympus ME-52 Noise Cancellation Microphone from amazon and use it with the included black windscreen cover via the mic jack (without the extension cord). It works very well, but would have preferred the built-in kind.

I’d like to respond to Linda’s complaint/review. I do agree that the mfr should be more up-front in disclosing lack of internal mic, however please let me provide a different point of view… for the benefits of other readers, at the least. I actually think a built-in webcam and no mic is the ‘best of both worlds’. I know, that seems strange, but here’s why.

A built-in webcam is creepy enough, but you can easily cover it with a piece of tape. We’ve seen in recent news that people can and DO hack into webcams and mics of people online–even (illegally so) a school providing loaner laptops to students, spying on them in their bedrooms.

You can’t turn an internal mic off (no mfr provides a hard switch). You can disable it in the OS, but it’s inconvenient, and you have to trust the OS and apps that nothing’s switching it back on. Plus (and maybe most importantly, if not realistically), internal mics usually SUCK. Even if it’s good, it’s generally too far away and too close to the speakers when integrated. So what you usually get, is a built-in mic which stays on all the time, with the creepy security risk (and Google saying someday it will eavesdrop on your mic and if it hears a dog barking in the background, will spam you with dog food ads, for instance)… and you end up using an external mic anyway. Maybe you’ve had good luck with integrated microphones? I know I haven’t. Nothing beats a headset, or something close to your mouth…. especially if you’re using the laptop’s speakers to hear your party.

A few years ago I had the opposite experience. I bought a laptop with no webcam, and it had an internal mic which wasn’t documented. I’d had it about a year when I installed a recording program, and noticed it was picking up noises when I was just trying out the program (with no input). The quality was so low it wasn’t useful, and the fact I had a useless mic which was only a security and creepiness liability made it an albatross. I wished they made laptops WITH webcams, but NO integrated mics, but I didn’t think anyone would do that. Then I bought this laptop (not this actual model, but similar) and was so happy–but surprised–that there was no internal mic. Really. YMMV.

Let me make a comment on my laptop. I have an emachines version which is identical but mine has a lower-power AMD CPU with a lower-capacity hard drive. Chassis and hardware should be identical. I was astounded at the quality of my webcam. It does appear to be only QVGA (quarter VGA), but the quality is better than the VGA cams I’ve seen. And because it’s QVGA, it updates a 4x faster on the user’s end (seems smoother, more motion-y). Best of all, it really is “optimized for low-light” like it says on the computer. If you have a white background on your screen, the light from the screen is enough for the webcam to pick you up fine in an UNLIT room (too bad Skype has a black background; I can’t seem to change it). (And it works fine in well-lit rooms too; no ‘overexposure’.) One low-powered light on in the room is good enough for this webcam (exceedingly rare to find on an integrated cam IMO). Which is really nice for those late-night conversations, which is really when you want to use a webcam, right? I can tell you firsthand it’s substantially better than a late-gen iMac webcam which didn’t do well in existing artificial light.

Over the internet, I let a friend a choose between my integrated webcam and a well-respected USB VGA webcam I’d previously bought. I didn’t say which was which, nor give techincal details, just: “which do you prefer?”. My party chose my integrated webcam, to my surprise (and delight). Almost all integrated webcams are crappy, and I’ve never heard of one which is actually excellent. Plus, it is aimed right at me, taking into account proper screen angle. It’s as if someone knew what they were doing when they designed it!

Personally, I use a little over-the-ear mic which came with that previous webcam I mentioned (now made obsolete by the excellent internal cam). These are really cheap to buy on the net. You can also get little “stalk” right-angle connector mics which are made for notebooks as you just plug it into the jack and angle it at you. But something close to your mouth is best. meritline, dealextreme, pcmicrostore, amazon of course and many others sell cheap mics of wildly varying style and quality. You can leave the stalk type ones connected–the smaller the stalk, obviously the easier it is to leave connected but the father away it’ll be from you. Other options would be a USB ‘speakerphone’, also pretty handy, but that’s more wires, or an adapter (which you can get on Amazon) which allows you to use your 2.5mm connector cordless phone headset in your computer.

With this laptop, ALL the connectors are in the right place. Very rare. The sound, power, and network ports are all on the left–where God intended them to be . You don’t have a power cable running out one side of you and a network cable out the other. Everything comes in at the left (yes!). There is nothing on the back, and nothing on the right to interfere with your mouse hand except for the optical drive, which again is also in the correct place for you to replace disks.

In the front, you have the card reader–which is a good card reader. It’s BOOTABLE, and faster than a USB card reader I have. Yeah it’s a little difficult to get to, and the action is very positive (you have to push pretty hard on the card to get it to pop back out), but I see that as a good thing, as the card is flush and is not going to pop out accidentally pushing up against you.

Honstly, I wish I had this model (I think it’s a new model). What I’d really like to know is how often the fan turns on when idling in this model? Mine is really quiet. Fan doesn’t run much, and is quiet when it does. My 160GB drive is the quietest drive I think I’ve ever heard, and I hope this 250GB is too, as it’s only 5600rpm. A lot of the 250GB drives are 7200rpm, which are quite noisier, and not worth the speed tradeoff for me (I use a 7200rpm in my work laptop daily, so I know). I only have 2GB RAM and most for users running Windows 7 (Windows 6.1 technically), that’s enough. However, if you open tons of web tabs, it is possible to max out in Windows 64-bit (I was surprised). 3GB or 4 would be enough for me but I’m a power user. This has 3, or 50% more than my 2GB. (The RAM inside may also be DDR3, which if true would be contrary to some spec lists.)

Likewise, I could use the more powerful T4400 processor in this model, I just don’t know if it creates extra heat. The mobile Intels are very efficient. I have an AMD but one of the newer low-powered variants… but gutless compared to this. However, my fan is usually off in idle, only coming on a couple seconds every once in awhile after it’s been on for awhile. I’d want to keep that–and want to know if this T4400 is cool enough it behaves similarly. Max heat of a T4400 is in the thirties of watts; my AMD creates 15 watts max, but max heat rating is not a good indication of idle usage. Anecdotal stories are much more useful.

Having used my laptop enough now, I like it so much (everything being in the right place, etc) that I’d pay extra for what I have now with more ram and a better processor–if that did not mean more noise. I’ve seen a lot of crappy laptops in my day (crappy=bad heat management/noisy, bad keyboards, and ports/connectors in illogical places). So I’m soliciting any feedback?

There’s no perfect laptop, but I think the fact that this one’s ‘thicker’ than most laptops these days yields hidden benefits that outway lack of thinness (and the lappy is pretty lightweight when you take the battery out, if you use w/a cord like I do). I have some issues with the keyboard, and yes there are only 2 USB ports (macbook only gives you 1?). But the intangibles are high here, including the very nice glossy screen, almost equivalent with HP/Compaq.

The keys are almost ‘stealth chiclet’, or ‘hybrid’. They have good travel (unlike chiclet), and are larger (unlike chiclet), but have no bevel (like chiclet), and only an imperceptible curve (essentially flat), which makes it surprisingly hard for your fingers to find the keys in the dark (and keyboard is unlit). That said, they’re nice and big and feel good due to good travel. Key location is above average, not perfect. They missed an opportunity to put page-up/page-down where they put those half-sized arrow keys. Why just leave that part of the keyboard as a blank hole, and make a button half-size, when you could either put a full-sized key there or put another half-size key above it? Again, nothing’s perfect. I’m not a fan of numberpads, so I sacrificed the keypad and assigned a slew of non-character keys to it using a freeware app called KeyTweak. Now a pretty happy camper.

If you go through Windows 7 power management in Control Panel and get aggressive on the ‘power saver’ profile (including aggressive screen dimming), as well as turn off the stupid Aero interface and other animations/effects, you can squeeze about 50% more battery time out. Disabling wireless helps, if you can, and also frees up about 50MB of memory.

I love the laptop overall, and friends who see it are envious. Thinner is not necessarily better. Read reviews of the newer thinner Acer models and you’ll see reviews are not as good. Most common complaints about this chassis form factor is only 2 USB ports, the silly layout of the number pad, the flat keys, and an occasional “slow Wi-Fi” problem I’ve seen in reviews which appears to be hardware-related (mine is fine and quite fast, actually). So if you get one, test out your wi-fi speed within the exchange period.

I shopped around looking for deals and at different models for about 2-3 months. Did lots of research on features and performance, and was overwhelmed at how man of these netbooks have the exact same internals as all the others. I finally went with the HP Mini 210-1055NR because it has the full glass over the entire screen and bezel that makes it look so much better than the 110 or similar dells. This just creates such a more aesthetically pleasing look to the entire netbook. It also had a little better specs than all the other clones that were budget priced all over the web (Acers, Dells, HP 110s) and with the extra RAM I bought for it, and the easy access panel that allows you to remove the entire bottom cover of the netbook, the upgrade was simple and performance is great!

I recommend this to anyone looking at getting a netbook for either easy writing or surfing. I haven’t played with HPs linux instant on software that comes preinstalled, but Windows 7 starter works just fine, despite previously hearing bad things about its limitations, I with it and am happy I chose it over the severely outdated XP.

One thing that is crucial to do is remove as much of the bloatware that HP installs by default on their new systems. You will see a significant performance boost and less harddrive space taken up by clearing off all the trial games and software that come with your new HP.

Trying to buy a netbook after their explosion in popularity is proving to be difficult, as manufacturers pump out far too many variations.

In addition to the listed specifications for each model of the HP Mini 210 (cpu, memory, disk, exterior color/finish), there are other physical variations depending on model number.

Depending on which HP Mini 210 model you get, some differences are:
- A different keyboard (“island” keyboard or traditional keyboard)
- A matte or glossy screen
- A different physical size of battery
- Different wireless support (802.11b/g vs 802.11b/g/n vs 802.11b/g+bluetooth)

At the time of writing, existing reviews and photos make it difficult to tell what you’ll end up with. According to the HP website, there are a dizzying one hundred ninety different HP Mini 210 models.

Some of the popular models that I saw had these attributes:
210-1010NR: Matte screen, traditional keyboard
210-1030NR: Matte screen, traditional keyboard
210-1040NR: Glossy screen, island keyboard

I ended up with a 210-1040NR. I prefer the island keyboard, it seemed to have less flex than the traditional keyboard. Touch typing on either keyboard was not an issue, punctuation is in the correct place, and both the shift keys and the spacebar are nice and large. The multitouch touchpad works better than the competition. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition 9.10 and everything works out of the box. (Although the internal fan appears to be on regardless of temperature)

For me, knowing the limitations of the cpu, keyboard, and build quality, the 1024×600 resolution of the display is the weak point. I see there’s also a HP Mini 210 HD lineup with a higher resolution display, which may be worth considering.

As far as 10.1″ netbooks on the market as of February 2010, after handling and typing on competing models from Acer, Asus, Toshiba, and Sony, for me the HP Mini 210 is the winner.

• Excellent Computer for an Excellent Price, February 10, 2010

I’ve owned my computer for almost a week now, and I’m absolutely loving it. For the money I almost bought an Hp with a T6600 processor and 320GB hard drive etc etc. I bought this for the same price as the other hp and got MORE memory and a better processor. Why wouldn’t you want an upgrade of 180 GB hard drive for free? If your a student and like to have lots of music, videos and play light gaming and still have tons of room for your homework and projects, this is a great computer.

I also love how its 14″ monitor, so I can take it anywhere and fit it into any bag. It has a very sleek and glossy exterior. A little bit of work to keep clean, but that’s no reason not to buy a computer. The speakers are great for a laptop. I was actually surprised how clear sounds and music was. As with most HP laptops, you get the lightscribe burner, which is great, but it also comes with a disc replacement thing so if you don’t care to use a disc drive, you can remove it and save some weight. But really it doesn’t weigh that much.

The only downfall I have with this computer is the slightly low battery life. I think a little bit of that might be my fault cause I just plugged in and played rather than letting the battery charge fully first before I started playing with it.

Great laptop for the price.
