LG has made a great product and it has slow mo for blu-ray disc. To many that may not see like anything special but my other 2 (Sony BDP-BX1 and Samsung BDP-1590) blu-ray players do not have this feature for any type of disc being played. Overall the unit does everything very well to excellent. The speed loading of blu-ray is not more impressive than that of my almsot 2 year old sony blu-ray but still fast enough for me.

Internet connections were a breeze via wired or wireless though I wished it would retain the wireless setting (SSID and passwords)when you switch to a wired setting. The online offerings are very impressive and all work: Google’s Picasa; YouTube; AccuWeather; Netflix with a free trial offer; CinemaNow; VUDU with one free rental; and PANDORA. I hope they add more apps with software/firmware updates.

The remote is large, easy to hold and has all the buttons needed to use all the features of the unit and also will in my case control the most basic of functions of my TV: power and volume.

Having the large 250GB HD is a luxury but not a necessity as the front USB port can be used to access an external HD at a excellent speed. So you could really save about a $100 by buying the identical BD570 less the HD. I like the luxury, lol.

I do not like the front panel having a flip down panel that always drops down to insert/eject a disc but not too much of an issue. The flip door becomes an issue when you need to insert a USB stick or cable then the door has to remain down. In addition when they designed these new LG units they should have added an additional USB port in the rear.

But that is all I can find fault with the unit. They are not too small but small enough and very light even with the HD and the remote and internet access are all great. Picture quality is fantastic with blu-ray and same for non-blu ray disc. The fact that you can actually insert a CD and rip it to your HD is nothing short of omg what a nice feature.

I have placed my entire music and picture collection onto the HD and it is sweet to be able to get such easy access to these files. The link to my Laptop PC files works even without having to use the LG software for sharing files bewteen PC/Laptop and the player and that too is a nice feature to have available.

The unit works and works great! I would recommend it highly to any or to save money the BD570 and then hook up an external HD. Love the unit. My biggest knock is the price given that 3D Blu-ray players are just around the corner it seems this unit would be better priced at or below $300.

I purchased the BD590 from Best Buy a couple of days after it first appeared in stock. I have had some experience with LG Bluray before since I own the also excellent BD390 so when I needed another one for a different room in the house the newer model LG was at the top of my list.

Having owned it for a few weeks I have the following to note.

Pros

1. Fast Blu-Ray loading times. Very crisp clear image and fortunately since I own a receiver capable of decoding Lossless HD formats I really like the sound as well. Does the Blu ray format justice
2, My favorite aspect of this and the BD 390 by far is the VUDU functionality. I think Vudu is a tremendous service (perhaps will get even better now that’s its been purchased by Wal-Mart). To have a large library of 1080p HD available at your fingertips is fantastic and the LG does a nice job displaying very pleasing audio and video off Vudu. I would buy this for this feature alone.
3, Although no shortage of Netflix ready devices in my HT lineup having this and other internet sources such as Pandora are nice options.
4. I read some complaints about the new interface compared to the older LGs but to my eyes its nicer looking and just as easy to navigate
5. I used Ethernet to connect this player but did test out the 802.11n and was able to connect to my Airport Extreme powered network with no problems
6. CD ripping is a great feature and I was able to archive a library of 200 CDs or so with little trouble. Gracenote does a nice job tagging the tracks.

Cons
I really didn’t find much not to like about this player. Mostly just nice to haves. I would have liked if it supported Amazon VOD since that’s my other source for video and I did think that the footprint was still a little large although sleeker and lighter that my older model.

I first lucked into the BD390 when it was highly recommended by a HT installer. I am pleased to note that the 590 is a nice upgrade with newer functionality on an old favorite. Highly recommended.

• Decent Blu-Ray Player, February 16, 2010

Let me start by saying, for the price, this is a good Blu-Ray Player. I got it for my bedroom as an extra player. I got tired of moving my PS3 back and forth (yes, I am lazy and didn’t want to keep doing this) if I wanted to watch a Blu-Ray movie in my bedroom.

Out of the box, setup was very fast. Initial start time was about 15 to 20 seconds; however, I enabled Quick Start which allows it to start in about 6 seconds. The options are very basic and what you would expect from a low end player. If you already have a PS3, PSP or Sony Television, the menu will be a breeze. If you don’t, it takes no time to get used to (which is why it has won awards).

I am used to my PS3, so the load time for a Blu-Ray feels very long. This is a minor complaint and something that doesn’t really bother me. I can handle waiting 1-2 minutes for a movie to load as it will stay in my player for the next 2 hours (roughly).

The picture and sound quality is what you would expect from a Blu-Ray player.

My only real complaint is that the remote control has to be pointed directly at the player if you want to use it. As I stated, this is in my bedroom which means I am usually lying down in bed when using it. I have to get up and go to the end of my bed if I need to use the remote. Again, this is a minor complaint and not a deal killer.

If you are looking for a decent Blu-Ray player, this isn’t a bad bet, just don’t expect anything other than a Blu-Ray player.

I have a PS3 and recently bought this blu-ray player. I love it. It loads just as fast if not faster than the PS3. The picture and sound quality is outstanding. I have played more dvds in it than blu-rays. I read a few reviews were people had problems with dvds, but mine has worked great. I have also watched dvds that I have burnt. I would suggest this player to anyone. For the money I don’t think you can beat it.

I was a bit skeptical about purchasing a Blu-ray…So I did the research and read many reviews. When my wife said the Sony BDP-S360 was on sale at one of our local stores. I checked the price on Amazon.com and found it to be $30 less expensive.. Once we received it and hooked it up with the HDMI cable, we saw a much better picture quality than our old DVD player. I am also glad we can play the old DVD’s on this player as well!!! I believe it is a great player and at a great price.

I wasn’t going to upgrade to BluRay til they got the price under 200 bucks. I picked up this one here on Amazing for 108 and change.. it’s done an amazing job with BluRay DVD’s, regular DVD’s and CD’s. The boost it gives regular DVD’s is pretty amazing. I had an HD DVD player first and it didn’t give anywhere near the same upgrade in picture. My only complaint.. and this is a riculous one.. is that the remote doesn’t have an open/close button for the player. Big deal. Everything else is awesome.

You should look closely at this player if any of these descriptions fit you:
-You own SACDs or DVD-As and want to play them on the same player you use for Blu-ray and DVD;
-You want to upgrade to a universal player that can transmit all audio and video formats (including SACD and DVD-A) via HDMI;
-You own a high-end video processor (separately or built into your receiver or display) that you want to use instead of the one built into your player;
-You own a processor that does not accept HDMI but does have analog 7.1/5.1 inputs, and want to use them to hear lossless audio (TrueHD/DTS-MA) from Blu-ray Discs.
-You prefer to do business with a smaller company that has a reputation for responsive and effective customer support.

You are not the target market for this player if:

-You require that your streaming solution (for Netflix, Amazon, YouTube etc.) be part of your Blu-ray player — this player does not stream;
-You own a very large display and need the very best available upconversion of standard DVDs (which would make you a candidate for Oppo’s $499 BDP-83);
-You don’t want to spend more than the minimum for standard Blu-ray audio and video performance, and you have HDMI-enabled equipment.
-You feel you can benefit from the audio performance of very high-end DACs for stereo or multichannel analog audio (which would recommend the BDP-80 or BDP-80SE).

While I’ve only had my BDP-80 for a few days, I’ve become very impressed with the thoroughness and elegance of its design. This is a very well thought-out player, aimed at users who have a reasonable grasp of the technology they’re using.

I should note that I did not spend much time on the file-playback capabilities of this unit. I did play a couple of MPG files I had on a thumb drive (there’s a port on the front of the player) and found a very nice menu and very straightforward operation. There is a long list of supported file formats.

Some of the things that jumped out at me:

-The very well-packed player arrives, inside the box, wrapped not in plastic, but in an Oppo tote bag made from recycled material.
-The manual is clear, well-written in English, and printed with premium materials. (Updated versions can be downloaded as well.)
-A 6′ HDMI cable is included.
-The unit has a very solidly-built feel to it.
-It is silent in operation (no cooling fan) yet does not run hot.
-Tray operation feels and sounds solid, well-damped, and not a bit flimsy. There is no ambiguity about whether the disc is properly centered in the tray.
-Menus are attractive and unambiguous.
-The remote has a number of unusual but useful controls, but is still comfortable and intuitive for basic operations. (Note that it is not backlit; the backlit version costs more and is available direct from Oppo. This is moot if you plan to use a universal remote, as I do.)
-The player is very quick in all modes of operation. It powers up and boots very fast; the tray is ready to open in a few seconds. Blu-ray operations are on a par with the PS3; other types of discs load and play as fast as most regular players.
-In my installation, at least, I connected to my home network, the player immediately configured itself, contacted the mothership, found and downloaded the latest firmware, all in a couple of minutes.

Detailing every feature of the player and remote would basically be to reproduce the owner’s manula which, since it’s available as a pdf on Oppo’s site, you can do for yourself. So I’ll end by saying that the player appears to do everything that Oppo says it will do, and does it quickly and without fuss. The company includes a one-year parts-and-labor warranty, and has an excellent reputation for customer support.

You can pay a lot less for equivalent performance in Blu-ray playback via HDMI, even in players with support for streaming services. If that’s all you need there may be no reason for you to pay more for a player like this. But particularly if you can use a universal player with Blu-ray, this is not just a great performer, but it’s a stone bargain.

I bought it’s big brother the BDP-83 a little while back for a seperate video system and was so impressed that when my very high end but 15 year old Rotel CD player started having some glitches I bought the BDP-80 to replace it with. It was beautifully packed , just like its’ big brother and I had in into the stereo system in less than 5 minutes.
I had not thought of the lack of flexibility of display or programming or info available with using a DVD player instead of CD player, but it was soon evident. The only reason it does not have 5 stars in my review. Now that being said I was amazed at how good it sounds. I get a separation of instruments I have never heard before. The sound is warm like the best tube stuff, too! I am immensely pleased with the sound of it. I honestly feel I couldn’t duplicate it for less than $1000! Unless I bought another BDP-83 for a couple of hundred more.
